Vida union demands respect for railway staff during Easter travel

Given the expected high passenger volume during the Easter holidays in 2026, the Vida union has issued an urgent appeal to travelers. Yvonne Rychly, patron of the "Workplace Crime Scene" project within the union, urged calm and respectful treatment of train and station staff.

Since the railway operators have announced significant service expansions for the holiday season, the employee representatives anticipate that the infrastructure will be operating at its limit. Delays or overcrowded carriages must not, under any circumstances, lead to aggression towards the employees who are responsible for the operational aspects on site but have no influence on strategic planning or technical malfunctions.

Further research highlights the tense situation on the Austrian rail network. According to recent surveys by the Vida union and the Chamber of Labor, attacks on railway staff have statistically increased in recent years, particularly during peak hours. In this context, the union refers to International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 190, which obliges member states and companies to implement effective safeguards against violence and harassment in the workplace. The union interprets the railway operators' recommendation to reserve seats in advance as an indirect admission that capacity could be stretched to its limits despite the addition of extra trains.

To defuse the situation, the Vida union is demanding that railway management consistently implement the newly agreed 10-point plan for employee protection. This plan includes, among other things, an increased presence of security personnel and technical support systems. A key demand is also sufficient staffing levels on platforms and trains to enable de-escalation before it escalates. Industry experts point out that a shortage of service personnel in stressful situations often acts as a catalyst for passenger discontent, which significantly worsens working conditions for the remaining staff.

The union emphasizes that employees on trains and at ticket counters are bearing the brunt of the increased passenger volume. While companies are anticipating record numbers of Easter travelers, staff safety must be the top priority. Respectful interaction is essential to ensure that operations can run safely and smoothly, even under high pressure. Vida announced that it will closely monitor compliance with safety measures over the holidays and will seek dialogue with transport company management in the event of violations of labor law or safety regulations.
