The Spanish low-cost airline Volotea will start a non-stop connection between Gibraltar and Bilbao on July 2, 2021. This ends a long period of anti-connectivity between the British overseas territory and Spain.

The last flight was in 2008 between Gibraltar and the neighboring country. He has been arguing with the United Kingdom for many years because the annexation, which took place a long time ago, is still considered illegal to this day. In the course of the Brexit negotiations, however, there was a rapprochement, because the overseas territory now belongs to the Schengen region. This leads to the absurd fact that, for example, passport controls are carried out before flights to London. Formally, these are domestic flights.

Even before the corona pandemic, there were only a few regular scheduled flights in Gibraltar. The offer was limited to destinations in the United Kingdom and Morocco. The airport is known worldwide for a unique curiosity: the only runway is crossed by a public road. When planes take off or land, car and pedestrian traffic is blocked by traffic lights and barriers.
