Without prior notice, the Greek government placed the island of Mykonos under a partial lockdown. This is initially limited to seven days and is justified by the fact that conditions are said to have been disregarded, especially in the area of night gastronomy. Celebrity parties are also said to have contributed significantly to the decision.
A night curfew, which applies between 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., has been imposed. The operating hours of the catering trade are restricted and, on top of that, playing loud music has been prohibited in almost all restaurants.
Worth mentioning in this context: Numerous players of the English national soccer team are currently spending their holidays on Mykonos. Local media report that they should have celebrated their European Championship victory intensely. The prominence of the players and the fact that the corona numbers have increased is said to have been a thorn in the side of the government.
The government has random quick tests carried out both on entry and in night-time dining. In the last few days, significantly more than ten percent should have been positive. The consequence of this is that the quarantine hotels are now said to be overcrowded. Restaurateurs who held excessive parties in disregard of the local Corona requirements were particularly criticized. The government has announced that it will take tough action because it does not want to let "some irresponsible entrepreneurs" ruin the tourist season.
The announcement of the nocturnal curfew alone has a massive impact on tourism, as local media write that airlines, hotels and tour operators are literally inundated with cancellations. In any case, holding parties is no longer possible for the time being, because this has also been prohibited.
