According to the current planning status, no fewer than six airlines want to match each other on the Vienna-Heraklion route in the 2022 summer flight schedule. These are Corendon Europe, Condor, Austrian Airlines, Wizz Air, Ryanair and Aegean Airlines. The products are almost identical, but there are differences in the details.

The hand baggage regulations of these six carriers are examined in more detail in this article. In order to be able to have a comparison, the cheapest tariff class is used. With all providers, they do not contain any checked baggage. Almost all carriers also have more expensive tariffs, which may include checked baggage, for example. This fact has not been taken into account in the overview below.

Condor with the most customer-unfriendly hand luggage regulations

The next few months will show whether all six airlines will actually fly between Vienna and Heraklion in summer 2022. At the moment there can be justified doubts, because the offer that can currently be booked with the six airlines is an obvious oversupply that could lead to ruinous prices.

True to the motto "it can be a little less", Condor is bringing the worst hand luggage regulations to Austria with the comeback in Vienna. In the cheapest economy tariff, you can only have a mini bag with the maximum dimensions 40x30x10 centimeters with you. The weight is irrelevant. This even undercuts the low-cost airlines Ryanair and Wizz Air. For example, if you want to take a trolley that is a maximum of 55x40x20 centimeters and weighs eight kilograms, you have to pay for it. The prices are dynamic and start at ten euros. There is no official upper limit.

Different maximum dimensions at Ryanair and Wizz Air

Wizz Air and Ryanair also only allow you to take a small bag with you. However, both the maximum dimensions and the maximum weight differ. The Hungarian low-cost airline allows 40x30x20 centimeters with a maximum weight of ten kilograms. With the Irish competitor it is no more than 40x25x25 centimeters and the weight does not matter. If you want to take trolleys with you, which both providers may not weigh more than ten kilos, you have to book the so-called priority package. There are again differences in the maximum dimensions: Wizz Air then allows 55x30x23 centimeters and Ryanair only 55x40x20 centimeters.

Corendon and Aegean Airlines allow you to take two pieces of hand luggage with you. The Maltese carrier allows one with the dimensions 55x40x25 centimeters with a maximum weight of eight kilograms as well as a small bag (40x30x15 centimeters), for which the weight is irrelevant. The Greek competitor allows the largest piece of hand luggage in comparison with 56x45x25 centimeters. This may weigh a maximum of eight kilograms. Furthermore, a small pocket is allowed, the dimensions of which are not further defined. Aegean Airlines means, for example, a women's handbag or a “thin laptop bag”.

Austrian Airlines allows you to take one piece of hand luggage with the maximum dimensions of 55x40x23 centimeters. The weight may not exceed eight kilograms. In contrast to Condor, Ryanair and Wizz Air, it is not possible to take a second piece of hand luggage (e.g. a small bag) with you, even for a surcharge. The Lufthansa subsidiary's tariff table has no such option.

Drinks and snacks only included at Aegean

As already mentioned at the beginning: All six airlines operating on Vienna-Herkalion do not include checked baggage in the cheapest tariffs. This can be booked for a fee, although the prices can differ greatly in some cases. All six carriers, without exception, are particularly sensitive to the checkout when checking in a second suitcase.

On board, snacks and drinks are only included in the flight price at Aegean Airlines. At Austrian Airlines, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Condor and Corendon Europe you have to pull out your wallet. The five airlines mentioned have a buy-on-board concept. In a similar comparison, Austrian Airlines scrutinized the on-board prices of various airlines. This can be found with this link.
