This UK Supreme Court gave the go-ahead for the construction of the planned third runway at London Heathrow Airport. A prohibition issued by the Court of Appeal earlier this year has been overturned.

The judgment of the lower court caused a stir internationally, because it was justified by the fact that the construction of a third runway could not be brought into line with the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. The supreme court saw the matter differently and overturned the decision. The way is now finally free.

The court justified the current decision by stating that the plans agreed with the climate protection requirements at the time of submission. Heathrow can now continue the project. The expansion is controversial and numerous victims, climate protectors, but also London's Mayor Sadiq Kahn have taken to court.

However, the construction of the third runway is not yet completely dry, as the formal building permit has yet to be granted. Incidentally, the highest court also stated that the Paris Climate Agreement does not necessarily have to be taken into account.
