From the beginning, Kassel-Calden Airport was controversial because Frankfurt am Main, Paderborn and Hanover can be reached quickly. The construction of the airport was described by critics as unnecessary destruction of taxpayers' money. Due to the corona pandemic, there is now even less going on and the losses continue to pile up.

The traffic volume has been kept within very narrow limits right from the start. Many holiday flights have to be canceled due to a lack of demand. There are no typical city destinations. Only Sundair offers a few hot water destinations, but the number of flight movements continues to decrease. Due to the corona pandemic, according to Hessischer Rundfunk, only 19 holiday flights from Kassel-Calden are planned by the end of the year. In mathematical terms, that would be a maximum of two to three flights per week, whereby the tendency that one or the other rotation could be canceled is quite high, because Germany literally covers the world with travel warnings and quarantine requirements. This has a negative effect on demand. In addition, Sundair is in a so-called protective shield proceedings.

The state of Hesse, the largest shareholder with a 68 percent share, expects a decline of 70 percent. According to Hessian radio, Kassel-Calden Airport is assuming even fewer passengers. Even without the corona pandemic, the company is in serious deficit: In the previous year, the minus was 5,6 million euros. The HR calculates that the state of Hesse pumps 18.600 euros per day into the regional airport. The subsidies from the other shareholders, who all belong to the public sector, are not even included.

State grants of 2020 million euros are currently budgeted for 6,8. Kassel-Calden may need even more money. This could come from Berlin, because Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) wants to help German airports with one billion euros. The project is not yet fixed, however, because Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) sees the airport owners more as responsible. Whether Kassel-Calden with its two to three weekly vacation flights will get something of the cake is in the stars.
