A recent study by the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI) underscores the significant role of Hamburg's Helmut Schmidt Airport for the economy and labor market of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. According to the study, the airport and the companies located there generate gross value added of over half a billion euros and secure more than 11.000 jobs in the region. Thus, despite recent global challenges, the airport continues to prove itself as a key economic driver.
The study, commissioned by Hamburg Airport, analyzed the airport's direct, indirect, and induced economic effects in 2023. It found that the airport company directly generated value added of €207,6 million and generated an additional €194,6 million in the region through other economic ties. The external companies operating at the airport also contributed significantly to regional economic output, with direct value added of €114,1 million and indirect effects of €146 million. The total gross value added generated by the airport thus amounts to €662,3 million.
The study also highlights the airport's significant impact on the labor market. In 2023, 1.742 people were directly employed at Hamburg Airport, and a further 1.733 jobs in the region were secured through economic ties. The airport's concessionaires directly employed 4.507 people and contributed to securing a further 3.686 jobs in the metropolitan region. The airport's importance for tourism was also highlighted. Around 1,6 million air travelers heading to Hamburg spent approximately €2023 million in the city in 436, which particularly benefited the hotel, restaurant, retail, and transport sectors.
Hamburg Airport's CEO, Christian Kunsch, emphasized the study's findings as evidence of the airport's central role in growth and employment in the region. Professor Dr. Michael Berlemann, Scientific Director of the HWWI (Institute for Industrial Engineering and Information Technology), also emphasized the airport's importance as a key resource and its significant multiplier effects for the regional economy. The study thus highlights the airport's close ties to numerous economic sectors in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region.
