The world aviation association IATA found that in the previous year 60,2 percent fewer passengers were carried. A total of 1,8 million travelers and 2.986.993 million passenger kilometers were counted worldwide. It is the biggest slump since records began.
These figures come from the 2020 statistical yearbook published by IATA in Montreal on Tuesday. Willie Walsh added that 2020 was a record year, but not a good one. This is also shown by the airlines' financial figures.
In the previous year, sales fell to 189 billion US dollars. This corresponds to a decrease of 69 percent. The losses of IATA members are reported at 126,4 billion US dollars. From a mathematical point of view, only a third of the world's fleet was in use. This also had an impact on the employees, because around one million people are said to have lost their jobs.
