The Verdi trade union is again calling for strikes at German commercial airports for Friday, March 17, 2023. This time Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf are affected. Significant restrictions in air traffic are to be expected.
According to the union, employees in the public sector, at passenger controls and at personnel and goods controls are called on to stop working all day on Friday, March 17th. Due to the shift work, the strikes should start with the beginning of the night shift in the night from Thursday to Friday. They should end on Friday at 23.59:XNUMX p.m., in some areas only early Saturday morning.
“Due to the strike announcement, massive disruptions to flight operations and a significant number of flight cancellations at the airport are to be expected. Passengers are urged to check the status of their flight with their airline or tour operator before arriving at the airport. A total of 148 passenger flights (75 take-offs, 73 landings) are planned for Friday,” said Cologne/Bonn Airport in a press release.
In Stuttgart, it is already assumed that regular flight operations cannot take place. The airport said in a statement: “Therefore, regular flight operations will not be possible throughout Friday. Only security landings, medical flights and military traffic can be carried out. Passengers and those picking them up are asked to contact the respective airline directly to find out about the status of their flight and not to come to the airport. A regular 169 flight movements were planned for Friday, and around 20.000 passengers are affected by the strike.
Düsseldorf Airport assumes that only a few flights can be operated on Friday, March 17, 2023. The vast majority will probably be canceled by the airlines or relocated to other airports. Originally, 185 take-offs and 183 landings were registered for the strike day.
There are also plans to go on strike in Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, specifically at the security company that is responsible for carrying out the security checks. Considerable limitations are to be expected here as well. The regional airport has not yet been able to provide any specific information on the possible impact on passengers. However, it is recommended to contact the airline.
