Extremely heavy rainfall caused India's Chennai Airport to collapse on December 4, 2024. The storm caused around 1.000 flights across the state to be canceled for safety reasons.
The bad weather was particularly severe in the Indian east coast. The Chennai airport felt this because it was literally flooded. Videos posted by eyewitnesses on social media show that the water level has risen enormously and that commercial aircraft have also been affected.
Chennai Airport has been hit several times in the past by severe storms, which also resulted in flooding. According to local media reports, at least 21 aircraft on the apron were affected in the latest incident. The airport had to be temporarily closed.
Not only this airport was affected by the adverse weather conditions, but around 1.000 flights across India had to be canceled for safety reasons. The airlines Indigo and Air India were particularly hard hit due to their size. If possible, aircraft that were already in the air were redirected to other regions that were not affected or were significantly less affected by the storm.
