Innsbruck Airport Director, Marco Pernetta, was elected President of this group of members in the European association ACI Europe during the conference of European regional airports.

The first meeting of European regional airports after two years of the corona pandemic took place in Palermo earlier this week. On the one hand, the meeting was influenced by the consequences of the pandemic, which has hit aviation hard in the past two years, and on the other hand, these consequences are put into perspective against the background of the current war in Ukraine. The more than 200 delegates experienced a very moving performance by the director from Odessa Airport, who reported on the dramatic developments and consequences of the war in Ukraine. Civilian airports and their employees have been one of the main targets of Russian attacks since the beginning of the war.

Another important item on the agenda of the conference was the election of the new chairman, which this time fell on the Managing Director of Innsbruck Airport, Marco Pernetta. For the next two years, Pernetta will chair the group with the largest number of members in the European airport association ACI Europe and, together with his deputy Andrea Andorno, CEO of Turin Airport, will represent more than 250 European regional airports.

"It is a great honor for me to serve as Chairman of ACI Europe, the advocacy group that is so important in the aviation industry," said Pernetta immediately after his election. "After the long corona pandemic, we had hoped to be able to return to normality somewhat in 2022, unfortunately we are already in the middle of the next crisis," regrets Pernetta, referring, among other things, to the report by the director of Odessa Airport .

In addition to overcoming the current crises, the airport association has also set itself the goal of continuing to actively and innovatively set the course for the fastest possible decarbonization of aviation. “CO2-neutral flying must be our goal! People want to continue to travel for a variety of reasons, and our task as the entire aviation industry is to make this possible in the future without burning fossil fuels," says Pernetta, explaining the main goal of the association's activities for the coming years. "At national level," the new chairman continued, "Innsbruck Airport, for example, will once again play a pioneering role with the introduction of emissions-based landing fees planned for the coming year."
