Italy will financially take control of some airlines due to the corona pandemic and compensate them. This is not about state aid, but about compensation for the financial damage caused by the lockdown. Unsurprisingly, the lion's share goes to Alitalia, but Lufthansa also collects through its subsidiary Air Dolomiti.

According to an official announcement, Alitalia will receive 412 million euros. Another 59 million euros will be split between Air Dolomiti, Blue Panorama Airlines and Neos. The sums will be transferred quickly, but will have to be repaid in December 2020 if the EU Commission does not approve the aid.

The compensation should be granted independently of possible further aid that could be granted in the form of state-guaranteed loans. The approval from Brussels is still pending.
