For the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic, Oneworld member Japan Airlines has returned to profitability. For two business periods, the company was deep in the red, partly due to the Covid 19 crisis.
For the fiscal year 2022/23, which ended on March 31, 2023, Japan Airlines announced a net profit of around 228 million euros. However, this is not sufficient to compensate for the cumulative shortfall of 3,5 billion euros accumulated in the two previous years. Also, the recent gain is well below what it had before the pandemic. The Japanese airline closed the 2019/20 period with a plus of around 470 million euros.
According to Japan Airlines, it can benefit from very high demand. After the Japanese authorities lifted the restriction, it initially recovered in domestic traffic. According to the company, there are now very good booking figures on the international routes. The fuel prices, which have risen significantly compared to the pre-crisis level, are having a negative effect. This has a greater impact on the Japanese Oneworld member because kerosene is usually traded in US dollars and the yen has lost significant value. Japan Airlines said fuel costs rose 122,3 percent year-on-year.
