For the first time in more than two years of lockdown, the Japanese government is considering reopening the borders to tourists. But you want to take it slowly and carefully, because initially only small, organized travel groups should be allowed to enter.

Local media report that a test run with organized travel groups is to be started in May 2022. The aim is to gain insights from this, which could then influence further decisions. First of all, one wants to wait and see how the so-called “Golden Week” will affect the infection process.

Japan is currently practicing comparatively strict entry and quarantine regulations. In fact, these can only be fulfilled by citizens or people residing on the islands. The number of daily entries is also capped at 10.000 travelers. From June 2022, the aim is to increase this to at least 20.000 people per day.
