After Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner made a clear commitment to the Eurofighters last week and said that the Austrian interceptors “of course have to be retrofitted”, she is now rowing back in an ATV interview.

An offer to sell the Eurofighter to Indonesia is still valid, there has not yet been a rejection: “We have not yet received a rejection. That's why we had to inform ourselves at the same time and see where there are opportunities? Because there must never be a gap in the area of airspace surveillance. And then, of course, we looked at other options.”

One is currently looking for other providers, says Tanner. It is not primarily a question of type. The Eurofighters are a system that works. With regard to a possible sale, one is dealing with cheaper variants: “I would no longer name a company here, but that was something that our experts were commissioned with immediately when the first inquiries came from Indonesia.” The goal is to ensure airspace surveillance.

Tanner is also in favor of legally anchoring the annual budget of the gentleman based on the Swiss model: "I believe that the opportunity is now an absolutely good one, the time is absolutely right." A legal anchoring creates planning, even across legislative periods, argues Tanner.
