London Southend Airport was hit particularly hard by the corona pandemic, with many carriers withdrawing their services entirely. In addition, the Group's own provider Stobart Air has also ceased to exist.
The recovery at Southend Airport is progressing very slowly. Apart from a few charter flights, only Easyjet has so far been persuaded to return. However, compared to the time before Corona, the orange low-cost airline only offers a few flights from this airport. Ryanair, for example, has so far completely turned its back on Southend and is concentrating on Stansted, Luton and Gatwick. Also one could not inspire Wizz Air for this airport.
Now there is a small ray of hope: Easyjet has announced the resumption of the Southend-Amsterdam connection. This route was last offered in March 2020. From May 24, 2023, the carrier wants to fly four times a week between the two cities. In the past, this route is said to have been particularly busy. Around 2019 passengers were carried in 200.000, according to Southend Airport.
However, it is only the proverbial drop in the ocean, because there are not many other destinations. Easyjet flies to Faro, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca. Although the low coster has stated that they want to grow again in Southend, they have not yet given any concrete goals. So far, no other airline has announced that it will start or resume flights from this airport.
