The Dutch airline KLM has given a total of 14 Boeing 737-800 medium-haul jets complete cabin renovations. New seats will also be installed, which should lead to a weight reduction of 700 kilograms. The project is expected to be completed by March 2022.

The new ergonomically designed seats for Business Class and Economy Class offer more comfort and additional legroom. The upholstery consists mainly of recycled leather. The seats are on average 20 percent lighter and reduce the overall weight of the cabin by 700 kilograms. This saves 58 tons of fuel and 184 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per aircraft per year. For all 14 aircraft combined, this means annual fuel savings of 812 tons and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 2.576 tons.

“KLM would like to offer its passengers on European flights even more comfort and style, while at the same time reducing the CO2 emissions of flights. That is why KLM continues to invest in its on-board product and its sustainability so that we can continue to meet our customers' expectations and emerge stronger from the crisis, ”explains Boet Kreiken, Executive Vice President Customer Experience, KLM.

At the same time, the 14 Boeing 737-800s will also be equipped with WLAN. In order to be able to use the service, passengers can purchase vouchers on KLM's free on-board portal. Passengers always receive 30 minutes of free messages. Each seat has its own USB port for charging devices in flight. Larger luggage compartments offer more storage space on board. LED mood lighting creates a fresh or calming atmosphere - depending on the time of day.
