Korean Air has set up its own task force for the transport of Covid-19 vaccines. This is intended to prepare the carrier for fast and safe transport of the vaccine as soon as it is available in large quantities.
The transport of vaccines is very complex and expensive, as special storage facilities and special equipment are required. Most vaccines have to be stored at low temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius - some products even require temperatures as low as -70 degrees Celsius.
Korean Air's cargo terminal at Incheon International Airport has 1.292 square meters of cold storage that can hold 100 tons of cargo. To expand its capacities, the airline is also planning to use the 2.533 square meter Cool Cargo Center at Terminal 2 of Incheon International Airport, which will open next year.
IATA recently announced that it would take 8.000 Boeing 747s to provide one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to every person worldwide. Air transport will therefore be critical to the safe and timely distribution of the vaccine.
"The Korean Air task force is reviewing all aspects of vaccine shipping and will develop a strong system and secure infrastructure for the rapid distribution of the vaccine once it is ready for delivery," said EUM Jae Dong, senior vice president and head of the cargo business Division of Korean Air, and continues: "We are doing our best to help end the Covid-19 pandemic by delivering the vaccine as quickly and safely as possible around the world."
