The Cape Verde government prohibited a Tui Cruises cruise ship from docking in the port or going ashore. The background is that three corona tests on board were positive. The shipping company is surprised.

Accordingly, it would not have been agreed that those who tested negative and who are also fully vaccinated would not be allowed to go ashore. The government of Cape Verde was tough given the concern that it could theoretically be the Omikron variant and did not allow the ship to enter.

According to Tui, corona tests are carried out before going ashore. In the case of three people, these were positive. These were disembarked in Las Palmas and are there in quarantine on land. The tests are said to have been negative for all other travelers. Nevertheless, "Mein Schiff 3" was refused entry by the Cape Verde Islands. Thus, the timetable was changed and now heads for Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.

A total of 1.725 passengers and 829 crew members are said to be on board. At least the adults and the crew had to prove before casting off that they were fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Furthermore, mandatory Covid tests were carried out before casting off and regularly during the trip.

In view of the Omikron variant, cruise ships are increasingly coming into the focus of authorities again. The fact that "Mein Schiff 3" was not allowed to enter is not an isolated incident. Competitor MSC is currently not allowed to go ashore in the UK. Aida Cruises is also affected and is therefore temporarily no longer going to Southampton. South Africa has temporarily banned MSC and other shipping companies from operating cruises.
