Croatia is the second member of the European Union to announce that the Russian vaccine Sputnik V will be purchased. If there is no EU approval by the EMA upon delivery, a national emergency approval will be issued.
So far, Hungary is the only EU country that uses Sputnik V. The Orban regime granted the vector vaccine national emergency approval. This applies only in this country and has no effect on other EU members. Last also urged Austria's Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) in public for a rapid approval of Sputnik V in the EU. The license production in Austria is also reportedly being examined.
On Mallorca are pushing the hoteliers also on the use of Sputnik V and have indicated their willingness to participate in the costs. Otherwise one suspects that the tourism season 2021 could be a total failure, because without Sputnik V there would be too few vaccination options available for the staff.
It can be assumed that various governments will soon be able to resort to emergency approval for Sputnik V, as there is great dissatisfaction with the EU Commission's messed up vaccination strategy. The vaccine marketed by Astrazeneca is also under criticism, something that Christian Drosten's PR efforts cannot change. Sputnik V is based on the same technology, but is said to be significantly more effective. However, it is not yet clear to what extent the Russian vaccine also protects against mutations.
