The Austrian Ministry of Defense is renewing the radar system at Brumowski Air Base in Langenlebarn. The existing one is over 30 years old and therefore out of date. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new building was carried out on Wednesday by Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP).
“Modern technologies not only make our everyday lives easier, they also improve the way our soldiers work. With this modernization, investments are made in the troops and also in the security of the Austrian population, ”said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.
The new radar system consists of a primary radar and a secondary radar. The primary radar provides information about the direction and range of the targets. With the secondary radar, additional information can be obtained - including the barometric altitude or the ability to clearly identify flying objects such as helicopters, airplanes or drones. The system is designed for observation up to a range of around 110 kilometers and for 24-hour operation. In the event of a power failure, the energy supply of the new system can be ensured by an "uninterruptible power supply system" and by an emergency power generator.
The construction of the plant building and the tower foundation will take place by the beginning of November. The single-storey system building, with a total usable area of 92 square meters, will be built in solid construction and designed with a green flat roof. The construction of the antenna tower is planned for the end of December 2021. The tower is about 20 meters high and is located right next to the investment building. The old radar system will be demolished from early August to mid-September 2022.
