Today, Wednesday, the Antonow 225 - the largest aircraft in the world - took off from Leipzig / Halle Airport (LEJ) on an aid flight to Windhoek in Namibia. Medical equipment is on board for the fight against the corona pandemic.
The freight consisted of 530 pallets weighing around 70 tons. The loading of the AN 225 was taken over by Port Ground, a subsidiary of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG specializing in aircraft and freight handling, in cooperation with the German Armed Forces.
Important hub for medical goods
In addition to regular passenger and freight traffic, Leipzig / Halle Airport serves as a transshipment point for medical aid supplies and protective equipment. In the first half of 2021 - in addition to regular traffic - around 70 cargo charter flights were already processed, which carried millions of corona tests and protective equipment.
