The Left in the Leipzig City Council is calling on the city to file a lawsuit against the approval of the controversial expansion of Leipzig/Halle Airport.

In September 2024, the Saxon state administration approved the expansion of the apron by 39 hectares in order to cope with increasing shipment volumes. However, critics, including left-wing parties and citizens' initiatives, see health risks from increasing aircraft noise and climate policy concerns. The city council is scheduled to vote on the lawsuit on November 21, 2024. The airport operator is planning investments of 500 million euros, supported by DHL Express, which wants to expand its logistics capacities there.
