Ljubljana Airport, operated by Fraport, expects to handle around 407.000 passengers by the end of the year. This will be around 40 percent above the previous year's performance, but around 75 percent below the value that was achieved in 2019.
Airport director Babett Stapel forecasts around 2022 passengers for 900.000. However, she does not expect the pre-crisis level to be reached before 2025. The manager expects that 19 airlines will be flying to Ljubljana Airport in the coming year. Mostly it should be a matter of resumption.
Ljubljana was hit hard even before the corona pandemic, because the former home base carrier Adria Airways had to file for bankruptcy. The capacity could not be compensated so far. There are repeated rumors that Croatia Airlines, for example, could set up a base in the Slovenian capital. The low-cost airlines Wizz Air and Ryanair are said to be similar. So far, however, no nails could be made with heads.
The Slovenian government is trying to support existing routes, but also new routes, with the help of subsidies. From airline circles, however, one can hear that the program is not particularly attractive for low-cost airlines. The Ministry of Transport also makes no secret of the fact that strengthening and building connections to the major alliances' aviation hubs have a higher priority.
