The German capital's airport BER also ended 2021 with a loss: On the balance sheet date, a loss of 530,8 million euros was reported that was not covered by equity.

For 2022, however, the operator promises an operating profit. Total sales are expected to increase to almost EUR 2022 million in 550, after around EUR 272 million in 2021. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) and special effects are calculated at EUR 177,4 million. In 2022, airport manager Aletta von Massenbach expects air traffic to increase and the number of passengers to increase to around 17 million, after 9,95 million in the previous year. That would still be only half of the 2019 level.

The new airport opened in October 2020 and just a year later, in autumn 2021, reported the need for financial aid: the owners would need a further EUR 2026 billion by 2,4. Operating processes and business development were clearly influenced by the effects of the corona pandemic in the first financial year.
