Polish national airline LOT Polish Airlines has expanded its route network towards Central Asia and launched a new direct connection to Kazakhstan. The flag carrier now regularly connects the Polish capital Warsaw with the Kazakh metropolis Almaty.
The service is aimed at both business travelers and the growing leisure tourism sector in the region. The addition of this route marks another step in the airline's long-term expansion strategy, which, as part of its strategic fleet and network planning, is increasingly focusing on destinations east of the European Union in order to position its Warsaw-Chopin hub as a central transfer point for passengers from Western Europe and North America.
The frequencies of the new service are staggered seasonally to accommodate varying demand throughout the year. During the current summer schedule, LOT Polish Airlines operates the route four times a week, with flights running on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. For the following winter period, a slight reduction to three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays is planned. The airline uses Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft on the route. These aircraft offer a modern cabin configuration and have the necessary range to economically cover the approximately 4.500-kilometer route between Central Europe and Kazakhstan with direct flights.
Additional market analyses of the aviation industry in Central Asia illustrate that, following the discontinuation of many flight connections over Russian airspace, Kazakhstan is playing an increasingly important role as a transit country and business partner for European companies. Until now, the market for flights between Europe and Kazakhstan has been largely dominated by airlines such as Air Astana and Lufthansa, which primarily serve the capital, Astana, and Almaty. With its new service, LOT Polish Airlines is positioning itself as a direct and competitively priced alternative in Eastern Central Europe. Flight times from Warsaw have also been timed to ensure passengers have optimal connections to the airline's extensive European and transatlantic route network.
LOT Polish Airlines expects the Almaty route to significantly boost both cargo and passenger traffic. The Kazakh economic metropolis is considered the country's financial and cultural center, with close trade ties to Europe. By deploying the Boeing 737 Max 8, which boasts improved performance compared to older medium-haul jets, the airline can maintain stable operating costs per seat on this demanding route. Furthermore, the integration of the route into the global booking systems of Star Alliance, of which the Polish airline is a member, ensures a broad international sales base for the new flight from day one.
