Lufthansa Aviation Training's first Boeing 787 Full Flight Simulator (FFS) is ready for training at the Frankfurt site.

This was made by the British manufacturer L3Harris in Crawley. The new training device for training pilots is the 26th Boeing 787 full flight simulator that L3Harris has built and delivered. The flight simulator is almost seven meters wide and a good seven meters both in height and depth. With a weight of 14 tons, the new training device is no lightweight either.

There was a time challenge with this project, as the 787 was planned to be incorporated into the Lufthansa Group for spring 2022. For this reason, the 787-9 FFS for LAT was manufactured in a modular manner and thus deviates from the standard. “Only the cockpit and the simulator platform were assembled by the manufacturer for the first acceptance at the manufacturer's plant. The L3Harris team assembled the remaining elements for the first time during the installation in Frankfurt. This included, among other things, the movement and vision system as well as the outer paneling,” explains Jens Jähling, Head of Training Devices & Infrastructure at Lufthansa Aviation Training.

In order to be able to offer training for the cockpit crews as quickly as possible, Lufthansa Aviation Training has reduced the test and acceptance times to a minimum. "Of course, nothing will change in the usual high quality and reliability of our training equipment for LAT customers," emphasizes Matthias Spohr, Managing Director of Lufthansa Aviation Training GmbH. "In cooperation with our own, very experienced engineering team, we had a partner at our side in the manufacturer L3Harris, with whom we were able to set up and approve the 787 full flight simulator in Frankfurt in a very cooperative manner and in record time."

In autumn 2022, a B787 model flight training device will be added to the LAT fleet, which should be available for training from October 2022. Lufthansa Aviation Training is the first customer of L3Harris Technologies for this new training device.
