Major Lufthansa shareholder Heinz-Hermann Thiele increases the pressure on the management of Germany's largest airline. In an interview with the news magazine “Der Spiegel”, he calls for around 30.000 jobs to be cut and for investments to be sold.
Thiele holds about 12 percent in Deutsche Lufthansa AG and caused a stir in the spring and summer, because he initially announced that he wanted to block state aid. He spoke out clearly in favor of a “planned bankruptcy”. However, the investor gave up the resistance and ultimately gave his approval. For a few days now, Thiele has been making his demands public again, initially towards the unions.
Now he is increasing the pressure on CEO Carsten Spohr, because the numbers are currently miserable due to the overall circumstances of the corona pandemic. In conversation with the Spiegel Thiele demands, among other things, that a “sustainable renovation concept” should be initiated. This includes shedding around 30.000 jobs and selling holdings. However, Spohr defends himself against so-called "distress sales". How this “power struggle” will end will be seen in the next few weeks and months.
