After the Ryanair Group, Eurowings and numerous other airlines, Wizz Air will also be in the future with a Maltese airline be on the move. However, there are differences compared to the competitors.

For example, while Malta Air and Lauda Europe have a Maltese AOC and the new Eurowings Europe is also aiming for one, Wizz Air Malta will have a so-called EASA AOC. However, they want to apply for the operating license from the Maltese CAD. Already today, Wizz Air Hungary does not fly with Hungarian AOC, but with EASA-AOC. It was the first airline in Europe to be issued with such an operator's certificate.

The Wizz Air Group is still very tight-lipped about what they actually intend to do with the Malta offshoot. Initially, the focus is on setting up the new aviation company, the group said on request. In particular, the question of whether Wizz Air Hungary will be closed in favor of Wizz Air Malta was not answered.

It would not be surprising at all if Wizz Air Hungary were to be “reflagged” as it were, following the example of Lauda Europe, Malta Air and Eurowings Europe. However, the carrier does not want to comment on this. The Wizz Air Group also did not comment on the possible Airbus A321XLR operation.

A spokeswoman told Aviation.Direct, among other things: “The successful launch of Wizz Air Malta later this year will help to further consolidate our strong position and support our expansion plans in Europe. At this time we cannot provide specific answers to these questions as the details are still being developed. We look forward to working with EASA and the Maltese CAA to advance this application and then to provide further details in the coming months as we work towards the establishment of the new subsidiary.”
