From 1 October 2022, local public transport in the Republic of Malta will be largely free. After Luxembourg, it is the second EU country that has decided to take such a step. The measure was decided more than a year ago and thus before the latest price increases.

However, not all users of public transport will benefit from the elimination of tickets, because tourists will continue to have to pay the regular tariffs. Residents of Malta and holders of the personalized Tallinja Cards should no longer have to pay anything to use the buses from October 1, 2022.

Among other things, Transport Malta explained that the personalized Tallinja card is the basis for free use of public transport. This must still be scanned when boarding the bus. However, no credit will be debited in the future. Anyone who does not have such a card or who falls or other exceptions must continue to pay.

Tourists who do not organize a personalized Tallinja Card will have to pay the regular tariffs even after October 1, 2022. Two euros are charged per bus ride in summer and 1,50 euros in winter. There will still be special tourist cards, but they will be charged. The personalized Tallinja Cards are not linked to residency in Malta and can be obtained by anyone for a processing fee. Online ordering including shipping abroad is also possible. Until September 30, 2022, a bus ride with the standard card (adult) costs 75 cents instead of two euros. From October 1, 2022, you will no longer pay anything with it.
