Malta International Airport will expand the Apron X for 40 million euros. The new apron will provide the airport with the necessary infrastructure to handle future growth.
As part of the Apron X project, an area of around 100.000 square meters will be developed, which is roughly the size of 14 soccer fields. This development will significantly improve the airport's stowage capacity and its ability to better accommodate mixed fleet operations, particularly during peak summer periods.
New parking positions will be established on Apron X, which will accommodate either seven code C aircraft or three code E aircraft, the former being the more common aircraft type landing at Malta International Airport, in addition to the 20 existing positions on aprons 8 and 9.
The multi-million dollar project will not only improve the handling capacity of Malta International Airport, but will also include the construction of a new taxiway that will improve the accessibility of the new apron and the construction of a strategically located staging area with facilities for essential ground handling operations. These additional facilities will complement the main expansion, contributing to smoother and more efficient operations on the ground and enabling Malta International Airport to accommodate further traffic and economic growth.
The Apron X project is also set to help Malta International Airport meet its environmental commitments by building a 10.000m reservoir for better rainwater collection and installing LED floodlights. In addition, as part of the project, preparatory work is being carried out for the electrification of parking lots, so that parked aircraft can be supplied with electricity instead of fuel. Work on the project is expected to begin in the coming weeks once the local planning authority has given approval for this development. While the company is targeting the completion and use of the first parking lots in the summer of 2024, the entire project is expected to be completed in 2026.
