The fact that Malta has only allowed fully vaccinated tourists to enter the country since Wednesday is likely to bring another "quasi-total failure" to tourism. The ministry is now trying to find a justification for the new entry requirements.
Among other things, one writes: "Malta is proud to be considered one of the safest summer travel destinations in Europe as it has achieved herd immunity (over 80% of adults are vaccinated) and hopes to welcome EU tourists safely this summer" . Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo was quoted as saying "All of our decisions are aimed at finding a balance and putting the health of Maltese citizens and tourists coming to our country first".
The Ministry of Tourism summarizes the current "Corona rules" as follows:
- Wearing masks on beaches and in swimming pools is recommended, but is no longer compulsory. A maximum of 2 people are allowed to take off their masks in the public outdoor area if they are vaccinated and have an official vaccination certificate.
- Beach bars, cafes, restaurants and cultural clubs are open and can accommodate up to six people per table, discos and nightclubs are closed.
- Fully vaccinated tourists coming from the EU are not subject to quarantine or other restrictions, while unvaccinated tourists from the same countries must go through a mandatory quarantine.
