Malta Medair, the second national airline of the Republic of Malta, is once again traveling between Luqa and Warsaw on its own account. For the time being until October 16, 2021, this route is to be operated under the MT code on your own account.
However, a look at the reservation system shows that there are no flights on this route on some Saturdays in July and August 2021. Possibly this has to do with charter orders as this is the main business of Malta Medair. The company was originally founded to provide ACMI services for Air Malta. The background is that there was a long argument with pilots about payment.
Local politicians are constantly threatening that Air Malta could cut Medair in favor of Malta. The last-mentioned carrier is to increasingly go on the line on its own account, whereby the only route that can be booked via the Malta Medair homepage is the one between Luqa and Warsaw.
The A321XLR project was quiet
The fleet of the “second state carrier” is manageable and consists of an Airbus A320 with the registration 9H-AEO. A few years ago, the then tourism minister, Konrad Mizzi, announced that long-haul Airbus A321XLR aircraft would be bought or leased. These should be used to establish non-stop connections to North America, India and Asia.
The plan at the time was that this would not be done under the AOC of Air Malta, but under that of Malta Medair. Basically, the plans still exist, but no order has yet been placed for this type of machine. The high economic risk and the corona pandemic are unlikely to have made entry into long-haul business at government expense a high priority.
