In May 2020, the number of passengers at German airports fell by 97,9 percent to 464.245 passengers. There was also a 10,5 percent decline in freight. 370.643 tons of air freight were handled in the Federal Republic of Germany.

In total there were only 27.046 commercial flight movements. In a direct comparison with the same month last year, this means a minus of 86,2 percent, announced the Working Group of German Airports on Friday. The domestic German flight connections recorded a decrease of 96,9 percent. European traffic fell by 98,3 percent and on long-haul routes there were 97,8 percent fewer passengers.

In summary, it can be said that due to the Corna pandemic, the number of passengers dropped to less than three percent of the previous year's figure. However, the airports remained connected to the network and were also used for urgently needed patient transports and cargo flights.

The corona pandemic is also having a noticeable impact on the total annual output to date. From January to the end of May, 38,31 million travelers were counted across Germany. This is 59,1 percent below the previous year's figure. Within Germany, the minus is 61 percent, in European traffic 60,4 percent and on long-haul routes 52,4 percent. Overall, commercial flight movements fell by 48,3 percent in direct comparison with the same period in the previous year.
