Effective April 11, 2022, the Republic of Malta is relaxing entry requirements. Those who have not been vaccinated can then enter the country again without being in quarantine. However, a negative test result must be presented.
In July last year, Malta surprisingly introduced the 1G rule and has since only fully vaccinated allow entry without isolation. Sometimes this had to be spent in the form of an expensive hotel quarantine. What is new now is that people who have not been vaccinated can also enter the country with a negative PCR or rapid antigen test result. Those who have recovered can show their certificate if it is not older than six months.
Similar to previous practice, Malta only accepts EU certificates with a QR code. Depending on the EU country, these are issued automatically by the test centers or must be explicitly requested. The latter occurs again and again in Germany, for example.
At the time of the entry check, PCR results must not be more than 72 hours old. Rapid antigen tests are only accepted for 24 hours. Important: Malta insists that both PCR and antigen swabs were taken over the nose with cotton swabs. The gargle tests, which are particularly common in Austria, are not recognized. Nothing changes for fully vaccinated people. They can still enter without quarantine on presentation of their certificate. Furthermore it has to electronic PLF form fill out.
