The comprehensively modernized passenger screening facility at Nuremberg Airport was officially opened. High-ranking representatives from politics and administration attended the ceremony, including Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, as well as representatives from the city of Nuremberg and the airport management.
The gradual modernization of security screening facilities marks a technological turning point for the northern Bavarian air traffic hub. The use of state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) scanners significantly speeds up and improves the comfort of travelers, as security checks are now much more efficient.
The new CT technology allows passengers to keep electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, or smartphones in their hand luggage during the screening process. A particular focus of the new system is the relaxation of the previously restrictive liquid rules. The familiar 100-milliliter limit no longer applies at the new scanners; instead, liquids may be carried in leak-proof containers with a capacity of up to two liters. The requirement to use transparent plastic bags has also been lifted. Only non-leak-proof containers, such as open cups, remain prohibited from being accepted by security due to technical limitations of the scanners.
In addition to the new equipment, the infrastructure layout of the security lanes has also been optimized. Each lane now has several parallel drop-off points. This system allows passengers who require less preparation time to overtake other travelers, thus smoothing the flow at the security checkpoint and minimizing waiting times. This measure is part of a nationwide modernization program at German airports. Similar systems have already been implemented at the hubs in Munich and Frankfurt, as well as at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, to meet increasing passenger volumes and heightened security requirements.
The rationale behind this investment is to enhance Nuremberg's appeal to both business travelers and tourists. By aligning with international standards and reducing stress during the boarding process, Nuremberg Airport is positioning itself as a modern service provider in the metropolitan region. Such projects are often financed in coordination with the relevant aviation security authorities, and the technological superiority of CT scanners not only increases comfort but also allows security personnel to perform a more precise three-dimensional analysis of baggage contents on a monitor.
