The Airbus A320neo operated by Air India with registration VT-CIH went into emergency on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. The pilots received a fire warning that affected one of the two Leap engines. However, this may have just been a false alarm.

The medium-haul jet was on a domestic flight from Delhi to Mumbai under flight number AI814. At first everything looked like a routine flight, but shortly before reaching the engine, the pilots received a message that one of the two engines had caught fire. The pilots managed to land this Airbus A320neo safely at Mumbai Airport.

The VT-CIH was already received there by the airport fire department. This was kept ready purely as a precaution. All passengers and crew members were able to safely exit the Airbus A320neo. However, the runway was blocked for about 25 minutes as some checks were still being carried out on site for safety reasons.

“AI 814 flying from Delhi to Mumbai on December 19, 2023 had a fire warning indicator on one of its engines. As a precautionary measure, an emergency was declared and air traffic control was informed. The flight landed without incident and no signs of fire or smoke were found during inspection,” said a statement from the affected airline, Air India.
