In the previous year, the Franz-Josef-Strauss Airport in Munich had the lowest number of passengers since it opened in 1992. The second largest airport in Germany handled around eleven million passengers. In direct comparison with the record year 2019: a decrease of 76,8 percent.

The number of take-offs and landings fell by more than 270.000 to around 147.000 in the same period: this is a decrease of almost 65 percent. The cargo volume - this includes air freight and air mail handling - reached a volume of around 2020 tons in Munich in 151.000 and has thus more than halved compared to the previous year.

A look at the number of passengers makes it clear how drastically the global travel restrictions affected the development of traffic at the Munich air traffic hub: with more than six million passengers in the months of January and February that were not yet affected by the pandemic, more passengers were recorded than in the following ten months. The around 90 airlines that regularly operate in Munich have massively reduced their flight offers in 2020 or even temporarily suspended them completely.
