Even after the opening of Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, the series of breakdowns does not seem to stop, because a leak has now been discovered in the roof of Terminal 1. Water penetrates through this into the hall.
However, it is unclear why this was not noticed before the opening, because the building has been standing for many years and it is very unlikely that it has never rained in it. The stairwell to the visitor terrace is specifically affected. It is not yet known whether the water is penetrating from the outside or whether the fire protection system is leaking. BER put up a yellow warning sign at the affected area.
The airport confirmed to the Berliner Morgenpost that the error was known and that it was a faulty sealed skylight. The deficiency is played down and the opinion is that it could "happen in a large construction project like BER". The presentation is a bit of an understatement, because due to massive deficiencies, the opening planned for 2011 had to be postponed until last weekend. So time would have been enough. After all, society wants to seal the leak quickly. It remains to be seen whether "quickly" means immediately or in a few years.
