Berlin-Brandenburg Airport just can't get out of the headlines: Because it is too cold in the main hall of Terminal 2020, which opened at the end of October 1, passenger handling was relocated to the side extensions.
According to the operating company, the main hall can be entered, but check-in and security controls take place in the side wings. The Tagesspiegel reports that the temperatures in the other areas are too low. According to BER, more pleasant temperatures could be achieved in the extensions for the staff and passengers.
Background to the cool terminal: Due to the fact that only a few travelers fly from Terminal 1, it only heats up slowly. In addition, the train station in the basement conveys cold air into the main hall. Around 12 degrees were measured on the platforms, and near the check-in counters in Terminal 1 it was said to have been 18 degrees Celsius. In the side wings known as pavilions, the operating company claims to have measured over 20 degrees on Wednesday.
The former Schönefeld building, which is known as the Terminal 5 are designated. These are to be taken off the grid for at least one year, although a possible reopening is still uncertain. Terminal 1, located next to T2, has been completed, but has not yet opened due to a lack of passenger traffic.
