The “new Alitalia” will be launched with just 4.500 instead of 11.000 employees. The fleet should shrink to 45 machines. The carrier is to be set up again in the form of the start-up Ita, however, it is unclear whether the Alitalia brand may continue to be used.
The EU Commission is planning to pass on the slots and the Brands to prohibit the start-up. That is why a “Plan B” has been brought into play in the last few weeks: the regional subsidiary Alitalia Cityliner could form the basis for the new carrier. But now, according to the daily newspaper “La Repubblica”, they want to stick to the Ita project.
The financial situation at the insolvent Alitalia is extremely tense. In February 2021, the carrier was unable to pay employees' wages on time. In the meantime, the employees are said to have received their money - belatedly. Due to the fact that only 4.500 employees are to be taken over by the successor, a larger demonstration is planned in front of the Italian Ministry of Transport in Rome. This should take place on Wednesday.
Alitalia has been in serious deficit for decades and has repeatedly been absorbed by the state and set up on new foundations. The company had to file for bankruptcy in 2017. So far, all sales attempts have failed. So far, the carrier has only been able to stay in the air thanks to government aid.
