New art installation at the tower in Basel

A large-format reproduction of the artwork “Vega Pâl” by Victor Vasarely has now been installed at the control tower of EuroAirport.

The poster is part of a collaboration with the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar and aims to highlight the cultural significance of the tri-border region. The design is taken from the famous "Vega" series by the Hungarian-French artist, considered a co-founder of Op Art. Through the use of geometric forms and carefully chosen color gradients, the work creates an optical illusion, suggesting a three-dimensional curvature and kinetic energy to the viewer. Its placement on the tower leverages the high visibility of the location to draw the attention of millions of passengers each year to the artistic treasures of the Upper Rhine.

EuroAirport has long used its facades as a platform for regional cultural exchange. The current installation focuses on the Musée Unterlinden, world-famous for Matthias Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece, which also houses a significant collection of modern art. The installation serves as a preview of the upcoming special exhibition "Conversation(s)," which will take place in Colmar from June 26 to December 7, 2026. This exhibition will place medieval artifacts in direct visual dialogue with contemporary works. The airport will act as a cross-border multiplier for tourism in France, Germany, and Switzerland.

The technical implementation of such tower posters requires special materials and mounting methods due to the exposed location and wind loads near the airport. Vasarely's work, with its strong contrasts and clear structures, is particularly well-suited for long-range visibility in public spaces. The Musée Unterlinden, housed in a former Dominican convent and expanded by architects Herzog & de Meuron, has seen a steady increase in overseas visitors in recent years. The large-scale presentation at EuroAirport aims to inspire these international guests to visit museums in Alsace upon their arrival.

Victor Vasarely, whose work significantly shaped the visual culture of the 1960s and 1970s, pursued throughout his life the goal of a "democratized art" that should be accessible to everyone. The installation at the tower continues this idea by leaving the ivory tower of the museum and entering the functional space of an international transport hub. For EuroAirport, the partnership represents an enhancement of the location and a stronger identification with the cultural heritage of the trinational region.
