The “nine-euro ticket” that is being offered in Germany for an initial period of three months means that in many cities, especially on weekends, public transport is heavily used in regional traffic. Now a regional operator prohibits the carriage of bicycles due to overcrowding.

Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft, which operates mainly in northern Germany, announced on Friday that bicycles are no longer allowed on some lines. The reason given by the company was that the rush due to the nine-euro ticket was so great that there was no space for the bicycles. Furthermore, the route network operator would carry out construction work in several places, which can lead to delays in the form of delays.

On the route Göttingen-Hannover-Uelzen (RE2) as well as on the line between Hamburg and Bremen (RE4/RB41) no bicycles may be taken on weekends. The ban begins on Fridays at 15:00 p.m. and ends on Sundays at 22:00 p.m. This is also a reaction to the fact that the nine-euro ticket is also often used for day trips.

The route between Uelzen and Hamburg (RE2/RB31) is also affected. Since June 10, 2022, it is generally no longer possible to take bicycles on this route. The reason given is that the construction measures by the rail operator DB Netz would not make this possible for the time being.

The Metronom Bahngesellschaft is aware that the measure will annoy many nine-euro ticket holders who want to go on bicycle trips. However, reference is made to the high utilization of the trains and it is explained that the decision was made to transport passengers rather than bicycles.
