On June 30, 2023, the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II and thus the highest crossing of the Alps from Zermatt to Cervinia in the Aosta Valley in Italy will be officially opened. On July 1st, the modern three-cable gondola, which connects the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise mountain station with the Testa Grigia valley station in Italy, officially goes into operation. On this day, the ride is free for those who are interested.
The new cable car route complements the Matterhorn Glacier Ride I, which went into operation in 2018, and now allows the two destinations to be seamlessly connected. Travelers can then reach Testa Grigia from the highest mountain station in Europe - Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3.883 meters - in just four minutes without snow sports equipment.
The new state-of-the-art cable car with 10 cabins can transport up to 1300 people per hour. The cabins cover the 1,6 kilometer stretch floating over the Theodul glacier, as no supports are required for the 363 meter difference in altitude. A special highlight are the two "Crystal Ride" cabins, which have a glass floor that offers a view of the Alpine panorama. But not only the breathtaking panoramic view, but also attractions such as the highest glacier palace in the world on the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise or the SnowXperience Plateau Rosa adventure world around the Testa Grigia station promise a lot of variety for the guests.
In the architectural design of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise mountain station and the Testa Grigia valley station, emphasis was placed on the fact that both stations should be visually integrated into the mountain landscape. The design of the spacious cabins comes from the Ferrari design company Pininfarina. The journey across the national borders from Zermatt to Breuil-Cervinia takes about an hour and a half. The valley station and the entire route from Breuil-Cervinia to Zermatt are barrier-free. From 2024 it will be even more convenient for travelers, as a luggage service is to be set up in the future.
