Slovenia has published its fifth call for tenders for airlines to promote new air connections to the country.
With this measure, the government is responding to a recent ranking by the Airports Council International Europe, which rated Slovenia's air transport connections as the second worst in Europe. A total of 2026 million euros are available until 16,8 to support airlines that establish new routes. So far, only 1,1 million euros of these funds have been used.
In the previous tenders, several airlines such as Luxair, Air Baltic and Norwegian Air Shuttle have successfully received subsidies. The new flight connections are partly seasonal, while some, such as Air Baltic, also operate year-round. The Slovenian government is prioritizing new flight connections to important European cities such as Vienna, Copenhagen and Berlin. Only airlines from the common European aviation area are eligible for the subsidies. Interested companies have until September 16, 2024 to submit their applications.
