The Austrian Federal Railways want to use modernized Nightjet couchette cars in Germany traffic. Initially, these will primarily roll from/to Hamburg under the name “Comfort”.

A few years ago, Deutsche Bahn withdrew from operating night trains because no further development potential was seen at the time. The ÖBB had a completely different view and stepped into the breach on many routes. In the area of sales, they work together with DB.

To date, ÖBB has converted 22 passenger cars from the existing Nightjet fleet into so-called "multifunctional couchette cars". These are now marketed as “Comfort”. These have capacity for four passengers per compartment. The beds are fixed. Also new is that there are larger parking spaces for bicycles and prams, as well as free wireless internet.

The modernized rolling stock will initially be used on the routes to/from Hamburg. In a second step, the ÖBB also want to bring this to the Nightjet routes Zurich-Berlin, Innsbruck-Munich-Cologne-Amsterdam and Vienna-Cologne-Amsterdam. ÖBB board member Sabine Stock explained that by 2026 they want to transport around one million passengers on night trains.
