Norwegian will not open Riga base until 2024

The low-cost airline Norwegian Air Shuttle actually wanted to open a base in Riga in the 2023 summer flight schedule. Among other things, this was intended to compete with top dog Air Baltic. But the plans have been put on the back burner.

The low coster regards the Latvian capital as strategically important and wants to expand traffic between Riga and Scandinavian countries with machines stationed on site. In the future, one can imagine including one or the other holiday route in the route network. According to the original plans, it would have are to start as early as the 2023 summer flight schedule. Nothing will come of it, at least for the time being.

Upon request, Norwegian confirmed that the planned Riga base will not open this year. The project was pushed back by a year and the aim is now to have the summer flight schedule of 2024 as the new start date in Latvia. No further reasons were given. The competitor Air Baltic should be pleased with this news, because although they have Ryanair and/or Wizzair or other airlines as competitors on some routes, they serve many routes without competitors. The establishment of a Norwegian base could lead to more competition and thus lower prices.
