Around 680.000 passengers are expected at Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg during the Bavarian summer holidays, more than 42.000 passengers on the first weekend alone (including Friday) - that's almost as many as before Corona and more than twice as many as in 2021.

Almost 5.000 tourist take-offs and landings are planned for the holiday season. The most popular destination is Antalya with up to 400 departures. In order to cope with the high volume of travel, the staff at the airport has been increased: “We have been running a major campaign since December 2021. Since then, we have been able to hire a good 150 new employees," says Michael Hupe, Managing Director of Nuremberg Airport.

"We welcome further measures for personnel recruitment, eg the federal government's approval of non-EU citizens for ground handling, for example from Turkey," Hupe continued. “We have registered a need and are planning to use it for three months starting in August. This gives us support to cushion the currently unforeseeable further short-term increases in traffic or rescheduling.” Volunteers from administration, technology and management also provide help for traffic peaks.

Two tons of luggage per shift

In baggage sorting alone, more than 120 employees from nine nations work 24 hours a day, according to the airport in a press release. During the holidays they load around 600.000 suitcases and bags, that is 13.000 pieces of luggage per day. One person can move more than two tons of weight per shift with their muscular strength. The staff at the check-in counters and especially on the apron will be increased significantly during peak times.

More than 20 airlines take off from Nuremberg

More than 20 airlines fly to the airport in summer. In addition to Antalya, top tourist destinations are also Palma de Mallorca (more than 300 departures), Heraklion and Hurghada (more than 60 and 40 departures respectively) and Rhodes (around 30 departures). Long-distance routes from Asia to the USA can be reached via more than 13 daily connections to six European hub airports. Travelers are advised to allow enough time and be at the terminal at least two and a half hours before departure. Anyone arriving by car can reserve one of the 8.000 parking spaces at the airport online in advance.
