In the first half of 2022, Austrian commercial airports were used by a total of 10.675.485 passengers. The result is significantly higher than the performance in the same period of the previous year, but the pre-crisis level has not yet been reached.

97.425 commercial flight movements were carried out in the first six months of the current year. With 81.017 take-offs or landings, the vast majority came from the country's largest airport, Vienna-Schwechat. With 9.237.544 travelers, this also had the lion's share of passengers.

With 29.049 passengers, Klagenfurt had by far the fewest passengers. Within the first six months of this year, only 489 take-offs or landings were carried out from this airport. In the same period, Salzburg had 634.397 travelers with 6.354 flight movements. This made the airport number one among the federal state airports.

Vienna: Continuous recovery since the beginning of 2022

Vienna Airport (Photo: Jan Gruber).

In Vienna-Schwechat there has been a continuous increase in use since the beginning of the year. In January 2022, Austria's largest airport had 819.674 travelers on 9.801 movements. Only in February 2022 were there fewer flights, but these were better utilized because there could be an increase compared to January 2022.

In May 2022, Vienna-Schwechat Airport was able to break through the two million passenger mark again. Most recently, in July 2022, there were 2.400.515 passengers traveling on 18.140 flights. This was significantly higher than the performance that Vienna Airport had in the same period of the previous year, but it was not yet possible to reach the pre-crisis level.

In the first half of 2022, 9.237.544 passengers used Vienna International Airport. 81.017 take-offs or landings were carried out. This made Vienna the Austrian airport that was by far the most frequently used.

In the first six months, the airport in Styria had 227.489 passengers with 3.605 take-offs or landings. Innsbruck: Strong demand in the winter months

Innsbruck Airport (Photo: Innsbruck Airport).

At Innsbruck Airport, the passenger development is exactly the opposite, because this airport had “only” 2022 passengers and 40.142 flight movements in June 513. In January 2022, there were roughly twice as many. Background: This airport makes the majority of its annual turnover and passenger volume in the winter months, as Tyrol is a popular federal state for winter sports activities.

However, by far the strongest calendar month in the first half of 2022 was not January, but March 2022. Innsbruck had 141.010 passengers who were on 1.087 flights. The vast majority of winter movements are charter flights.

In the first six months of the current year, Innsbruck had 463.537 passengers. 4.350 flights were carried out. This puts the Tyrolean airport in second place among the federal state airports, behind Salzburg but ahead of Graz.

Klagenfurt: Austria's weakest airport with 29.049 passengers

Klagenfurt Airport (Photo: Lilihill).

It was downright devious in winter 2022 in Klagenfurt. In January and February 2022, there were fewer than 30 flights each. This was also reflected in the number of passengers, because in the second month of the current year, for example, only 1.345 passengers used Carinthian Airport.

Roughly speaking, in June 2022 it was almost tenfold compared to the beginning of the year, because Klagenfurt Airport had 10.311 passengers on 155 flights. The only destinations currently on the line are Vienna and Cologne/Bonn. In the summer of 2022, there are a few more destinations for charter traffic. Ryanair wants to offer three routes from Carinthia in the 2022 winter flight schedule.

With 29.049 passengers who were traveling on 489 flight connections, Klagenfurt had the worst result among the federal state airports in the first half of 2022.

Linz Airport started 3.435 with 173 passengers on 2022 flight movements. Apart from a "slip" in February 2022, there was continuous growth.

In June 2022 there were 32.520 travelers with 428 flight movements. This means that in a single calendar month there were more passengers and more take-offs and landings than in Klagenfurt in the entire first half of the year.

Linz counted 83.469 passengers in the first six months of the current year. 1.610 flight movements were carried out.

Salzburg: Austria's second busiest airport

Salzburg Airport (Photo: Salzburg Airport Presse).

Similar to Innsbruck, Salzburg Airport also accounts for the lion's share of the annual volume and turnover in the cold season. Therefore, the strongest calendar month in the first half of the year was March 2022. Austria's second largest airport had 144.388 passengers with 1.346 flight movements.

In June 2022, Salzburg Airport was used by 99.721 travelers. 935 flights were carried out. In the first six months of the current year, Salzburg counted 634.397 passengers with 6.354 take-offs or landings. This makes this airport Austria's number two after Vienna-Schwechat. Among the provincial airports, it takes first place ahead of Innsbruck and Graz.
