Stern-Schifffahrt, based in Upper Austria, is now using Shell GTL Fuel on Lake Attersee. This should be more environmentally friendly compared to other fuels. Since 2011, they have also been operating a ship that has a solar drive.
“By using this synthetic fuel, we meet the emission standards for the latest generation of engines. The fuel burns without soot particles, which means it emits significantly less pollutants, is almost odorless and practically sulphur-free. And our customers can enjoy the experience at the lake and our regional delicacies on board even better,” says Managing Director Doris Cuturi-Stern.
According to company information, the company founders, Josef Stern and Franz Hafferl, used electric ships on Lake Attersee as early as 1913. In 2011, this form of propulsion celebrated its comeback with the commissioning of Austria's first solar ship. Starting this year, ships with conventional internal combustion engines are to be fueled with Shell GTL Fuel, a synthetic fuel.
